How Google Understands Entities: Knowledge Graph, NLP, and Entity SEO

What entities are in the context of Google search
In Google's framework, an entity is any person, place, organization, concept, product, or creative work that is distinct, identifiable, and can be described with factual attributes. Barack Obama is an entity. Google is an entity. "Topical authority" is a concept entity. The iPhone 16 Pro is a product entity. Entities are the nouns of the world model that Google's Knowledge Graph represents.
Entity understanding allows Google to move beyond keyword matching to knowledge-based retrieval: when someone searches for "the 44th president of the United States," Google knows the answer is Barack Obama even though the query does not contain his name. The same principle applies to content: a page that mentions and accurately describes the entities associated with a topic signals topical authority in a way that keyword repetition cannot.
How entity association affects rankings
Google associates entities with sites and individual pages based on the frequency, accuracy, and context in which those entities are mentioned. A site that consistently and accurately discusses "topical authority," "keyword clustering," "search intent," "hub-and-spoke linking," and "schema markup" will be associated with the entity cluster around "SEO content strategy" — which improves rankings across all queries in that entity neighborhood.
For content creators: this means that using the correct terminology, naming the relevant tools and methodologies, and accurately describing the entities in your field is more important than repeating target keywords. Structured data and entity recognition
Schema markup is the most direct way to tell Google what entities a page references and how they relate.
